BUKIT LANJAN: Of Ah Longs (loan sharks), hawkers, petty traders and food hygiene …

Ah Longs (loan sharks), hawkers, petty traders and food hygiene are all inter-related.

Many hawkers and petty traders have fallen prey to Ah Longs. They are easy prey to Ah Longs because of their desperation for funds.

And food hygiene is a protracted issue and concern afflicting hawkers in Malaysia.

“That said, both state and federal governments must give attention to their common needs and provide aid to help uplift their financial woes,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.

He said the problem with hawkers and petty traders “is that they take high risks to borrow from Ah Longs. Most end up with a nightmare of debt repaying.

“A nightmare that sees the majority of them repaying their debts with no end, with many fleeing and going into hiding. Some even flee the country,” he added.

Syed Razak, who is Gerakan’s nominee to contest N.37 Bukit Lanjan in the coming 14th General Election (GE14), said the financial woes of hawkers and petty traders worsen when they “mismanage or misuse their earnings and borrowings”.

Speaking at a MyHawker cum 1Malaysia Chinese hawker micro credit fund roadshow by Yayasan Pejaja dan Peniaga Kecil 1Malaysia (YPPKM), Syed Razak urged errant hawkers and petty traders to “change their ways for the better”.

“If you need financial help, forget the Ah Longs. Avoid them like blood-sucking leeches.

“Go to YPPKM for financial loans. And be responsible food handlers, practice strict hygiene at all times,” he added.

At the road show,
Syed Razak also gave away YPPKM-sponsored gloves and aprons to hawkers at the Restoran Woh coffee shop in Bandar Sri Damansara on Juy 4, 2017.
