BUKIT LANJAN: 140,000 ‘nabbed’ by AES cameras confirm Malaysians are rich and lack of respect for the law
The fact that 140,000 speedsters or red light beaters were pictured by the Road Transport Department (JPJ)’s Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras is very telling indeed.
And, this is from only 21 AES cameras nationwide since the implementation of the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) on April 15.
“Malaysian motorists just don’t fear the law. ” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.
“Errant Malaysian motorists also appear to be prepared to pay the compound fines because they feel rich,” he added.
At about RM300 per offences, the 140,000 motorists will be ‘donating’ to the federal government RM42 million in compound fines!
“Thank you very much for contributing to nation-building. But, they are all a danger to law-abiding road users nationwide, and that’s the main worry or threat,” he added.
“Do they lack civics and moral education? Why do they continue to disrespect the road traffic regulations and laws of the country?
“If the current road traffic regulations and laws are still ineffective to curb or cut down offenders, do we need to review the regulations and laws to consider harsher penalties and punishments?”
“Road bullies and stubborn motorists who continue to disregard the regulations and laws, you only have yourselves to blame if the RTD and police are forced to clamp down harder on road traffic offender.
“You will be blamed for all the inconvenience and sufferings under harsher regulations and laws,” Syed Razak said.

AES camera at Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur.. |
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the summonses had been issued since the implementation of the Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) on April 15.
“A total of 142,135 notices of summons were issued under Awas.
“Of this, 12,354 were for motorists who beat the red light while 129,781 were issued summonses for speeding,” he said in a written reply to a question by Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PAS Pokok Sena) in Dewan Rakyat.
He added that some 7,258 motorists had received points under the Awas demerit system.
Presently, Liow said there were 21 Automated Enforcement System cameras (AES) operating under Awas.
He noted that Perak had eight AES cameras, three in Kuala Lumpur, two each in Putrajaya, Selangor, Johor and Terengganu and one each in Kelantan and Kedah.
Awas is the amalgamation of the demerit system under the Traffic Offences System (Kejara) and AES network of cameras.
Under Awas, traffic offenders captured by the AES would be issued summonses of between RM150 and RM300.
Motorists who accumulate a maximum 20 points under the demerit point system may either be issued warnings or have their driving licences suspended or revoked."
