BUKIT LANJAN: Is it OK to beat up maids as long as they don’t die?
There’s no doubt law-abiding and sane Malaysians are shocked that the woman who assaulted a 19-year-old Indonesian maid has been punished with just a slap in the wrist.
And, why was the charge of attempted murder reduced to causing grievous hurt?
“Is it because she is a Datin? The prosecution owes Malaysians an explanation for this case,” Gerakan Deputy Speaker Syed Abdul Razak Alsagoff said.
He said it was heartening to note that Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali had reportedly said that he had instructed for an appeal to be filed against the inadequacy of the sentence.
“Not just the inadequacy of the sentence. Why reduce the attempted murder charge? The maid could have died if she had not managed to escape from the Datin’s hell house,” he added.
Syed Razak said Apandi should treat the case with urgency and priority due to public interest and justice.
“Any unnecessary delay may attract negative criticisms that will surely affect the image of the Attorney-General’s Chambers.”
“The fact that an online petition demanding a harsher sentence for (Datin) Rozita Mohd Ali has attracted more than 14,000 signatories speaks volume of the rakyat (people)’s concern for the injustice."

“That it is alright to beat them up like slaves or animals as long as they do not die?
“And, what do Indonesians and others think about Malaysians and Malaysia?”
Syed Razak said: “Clearly, this not just a national public interest case. It is an international interest case!
“The charge and punishment must reflect the seriousness of the case, no matter who is the accused, a layman or someone with status in society.”

MALAYSIANS launched an online petition demanding a harsher sentence for Rozita Mohd Ali, charged with abusing her maid two years ago.
To date, 13,940 people have signed the online petition launched yesterdaycalling for Rozita to be charged with attempted murder or intent to cause serious bodily harm.
The petition, titled “Calling for equal justice”, targeted 15,000 Malaysians to sign it and is addressed to Prime Minister Najib Razak and de facto law minister Azalina Othman Said.
The petiton on change.org highlighted Rozita's behaviour towards her maid was despicable, inhumane and should result in stricter punishment than a "good behaviour bond".
It said that she should have been charged with attempted murder or intent to cause serious bodily harm.
"We elected a government that should not have any influence in our justice system. Even if she was a datin, rich or had connections, it doesn’t give her the right to treat people like that.
"What message are we sending to our people and children? Malaysia needs to seriously look at our human rights issue."
Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali had said that he had instructed for an appeal to be filed against the inadequacy of the sentence.
